June in Wengen: Explore Alpine flowers on Männlichen and the enchanting Biglenalp

Book an apartment with Alpine Holiday Services in June and discover a plethora of vibrant and beautiful Alpine flowers in their natural habitats. There are as many hunting grounds as there are alps. Of course you dont need to look far from your door; flowers abound in Wengen itself. Cooler temperatures higher up on Männlichen, Biglenalp, Mettlenalp and Kleine Scheidegg will necessarily be at a different stage of bloom and exploring the region is all the more  fascinating for that.

On Schynige Platte, the semi-cultivated, Botanical Alpine Garden is very rewarding both in June and July; the specific flowers in bloom depending on the advancement of the season in any given year. And if you enjoy a touch of nostalgia, you are in for a real treat aboard the Schynige Platte Cogwheel Railway. The train ride up through Beech forests, across alp and along precipitous mountain contours can be enjoyed at a very leisurely pace and is especially atmospheric late in the summer season.

If you are interested in identifying and naming these exquisite flora, be sure to bring along an illustrated guide book. Many alps are easily accessed by rail and cableway so hiking isn’t a must-do to enjoy the colour, although summer hikes are extra special at this time of year. Alpine plants can be found adapted to high altitude on less accessible hiking routes, perhaps a little later in the summer than might be expected.

Chalet Schlössli

Privileged to offer this  holiday retreat, we so enjoyed photographing

Over a hundred years ago this farmhouse was a very different place, but it still retains its essence and certainly the outlook has changed very little. The owners have sympathetically renovated the chalet Schlössli and tastefully furnished it for modern living. Many beguiling curios from the period have been brought together for your pleasure should you choose to retreat into this high world above the mountain resort of Wengen.

Summer evenings, coloured in with vibrant Alpine flowers, warmed by firelight and occasionally flooded with moonlight are truly special. Not to mention the glaciated Jungfrau peak, the snow-capped Breithorn and the verdant Lauterbunnen Valley.

June Moon

June’s full moon, is a supermoon known as a Strawberry Moon

The Earth’s satellite, the moon, reflects the light from the sun and as every school child knows, it waxes and wanes. Its mirrored light is an unearthly, silvery white and it embodies the rhythm of time. Hard to credit that a human first walked on the moon’s surface as long ago as 1969 and none has done so since 1972. Enjoy the Jungfrau Region throughout the year, in all its colours and lights, with Alpine Holiday Services.

Long days

The sun’s searchlight sweeps across the plateau of Wengen

The world renowned holiday resort of Wengen lies on a south facing mountain plateau high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley in the Canton of Berne, Switzerland. Wengen enjoys the daily sweep of the sun in June, barring the early and late block of the amphitheatre of mountains which surrounds it. But be assured, you can even see the sun set from the Männlichen on barbecue evenings in  July and August.

Hiking in June

End of May at Eiger glacier and summer days on the alp

Hiking around Wengen in early June might still be restricted by sequestered snow. In this event, hiking trails to Kleine Scheidegg, the Leiterhorn and Männlichen’s Crown, are picturesque alternatives to the Panorama hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg and the high walks to Faulhorn and Oberhornsee. By late June most treks are possible. A favourite hike is the Romantic Way from Männlichen. Usually less frequented than the Panorama Hike, but nonetheless rich in variety and scenery, it wends its way around the Tschuggen, across the alp and through a copse of stone pines before climbing up from Bustiglen to the Scheidegg. A pleasant descent is then by way of Haaregg to Biglenalp and Wengernalp.

Pictured on the previous spread, at the end of May, is a section of the Eiger moraine as seen from Eigergletscher. If in need of a challenge, hike up from Wengen, through Stalden and Biglenalp to Haaregg and along the moraine to Eigergletscher station. At the upper reaches of the trek, the terrain is distinctive. The views up close to the Jungfrau are impressive and the glacier itself slowly flows down ahead. Alternatively alight from the Jungfrau train at Eigerglestcher Station and enjoy the magnificent mountainscape in reverse.

Pictured to the left is a tarn on the slopes of the Tschuggen Mountain. This is part of the Romantic Way and affords views across to the Wetterhorn, Grindelwald, the Schreckhorn and the Eiger. Climbimg up from Bustiglen, the Jungfrau is before us. I have heard it said that the only reason to do the hike is to sit on the bench below the stone pines and enjoy the view of the Eiger and Jungfrau Mountains.

Hiking trails in the Jungfrau Region are plentiful and cater to all levels of fitness. Wengen is a charming resort centrally placed in the Jungfrau Region. You can explore from a picturesque base in these beautiful mountains. Alpine Holiday Services offers a truly wide range of accommodation you can trust.
