The Jungfraujoch or ‘Top of Europe’ Journey to the highest railway station in Europe is an epic one. The Jungfraujoch is a saddle of rock lying between the Mönch and Jungfrau Mountains in the Bernese Oberland. That is to say, it’s part of the iconic Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau chain pictured above. And to build a clearer picture, the Sphinx Observation deck of the Jungfraujoch can be made out to the right of the pines.

Konkordiaplatz lies to the fore. Importantly, as its name suggests, it’s a concordance or meeting of four large glaciers. Surprisingly, at Konkordia the glacier has a speed of about 200 metres per year or 50 cms per day. It represents a snow and ice thickness of over 900m according to a measurement made by ETHZ. To complete this amazing view, magnificent high peaks rise iceberg-like from the sea of white.
If the weather and season allow, get out onto the glacier itself and hike to the Mönchsjoch hut. Not least because to feel like mountaineers and climb in the rarefied air is a life affirming experience. Also refreshments are available at the mountain hut.
