Visit the picturesque environs of Alpine Wengen virtually with us, Alpine Holiday Services. We are looking forward to seeing you here in person whenever. We have so much to share… village charm, Swiss folklore and fondue, mountain air, vistas of Alpine peaks, valleys and lakes, welcoming chalet apartments and activities to challenge even the most ardent enthusiasts!
For more about the resort of Alpine Wengen itself see our news article at alpineholidayservices.chTo orientate the new visitor, we should explain that Alpine Wengen is unusual. It’s only accessible by aerial cableway, cogwheel railway and on foot. The village lies on a sunny shelf high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley in the Swiss Alps. Picture an amphitheatre with Alpine Wengen on the stage and the ‘ziggurat’ of rocky seats replaced by walls of Alp. Männlichen is a 5-minute, steeply rising, aerial cableway ride away. A scenic cogwheel railway connects Alpine Wengen with greater heights and depths.
See Männlichen
For the fit and vertigo free, the Chamois trail up the steep mountainside from Alpine Wengen is both energising and challenging. Once there, the crown summit is but a short climb further. Breathe the fresh rarefied air and feel the gentle breeze on your face. The panorama unfolds breathtakingly. Add the intense orange-red light of the setting sun and it becomes magically alight. Join us for summer barbecues at the Berghaus in July and August. Favourite onward trails around and down the Tschuggen mountain to Kleine Scheidegg, are the Panorama Trail and the Romantic Trail. Alternatively summer sledding to Holenstein is usually available in the summer season.
See Nature from Alpine Wengen to Eigergletscher
Climb aboard for the scenic cogwheel railway journey to Eigergletscher and further to the ‘ Top of Europe’. Or follow our favourite hiking trail from resort Wengen. It takes us past waterfall and stream to Innerwengen and the farming hamlet of Staubbachbänkli. Travel upwards on the forest trail just in from the cliff’s edge and offering fine views of the U-shaped valley retreating below. Emerging from the forest, the majestic Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau Mountain trio confronts us and is our constant companion henceforward. Biglenalp is a special place. Not only because the alp becomes a colourful carpet of Alpine blooms in June and July. But also because its atmosphere is eerie and its beauty entrancing. Continuing our hike along the glacial moraine beside the abyss of the Trümmelbach, we reach the area of Eigergletscher (Eiger Glacier). It’s a ‘moonscape’. Visit and add your own piece of limestone to the growing pile.
Water and Rock at Staubbach and Trümmelbach
The meeting of the two great elements, Earth and water, has created spectacular caverns in the rock at Trümmelbach Falls, below Wengen. Water thunders and cascades through the mountain caverns to the valley floor where it flows into the White Lütschine River and on to the Brienzersee. Have your camera at the ready when the Wengen train leaves the station at Lauterbrunnen. Staubbach Falls are on the righthand side. Catch it around noon when the sunlight filters through the spray of water droplets like dust motes in the air.
Dine Alfresco at the Leiterhorn
The Leiterhorn is to be found to the north of Alpine Wengen. A pleasing trail is open throughout the year. Barbecue facilities are on site at the apex and the views are spectacular. A short detour from here brings us to the lookout point over the Lauterbrunnen Valley and towards Schynige Platte.
