Oberhornsee Hike: ’15 Hinteres Lauterbrunnental
Delicate flowers, icy north faces, wild streams, romantic mountain hotels’ Rother Walking Guide, Bernese Oberland East
Oberhornsee mountain tarn lies at 2065m. Its atmosphere is truly rarefied and is ample reward for the somewhat strenuous, epic journey. Views from here stretch towards the glacial moraine and the broad- peaked Breithorn and back for an unusual view of the Jungfrau Mountain.
Lower Reaches of Oberhornsee – Lauterbrunnental Hike

From Stechelberg the mule path takes us up this beautiful, unspoilt Lauterbrunnental or Valley, first to the left of the Weisse Lütschine then to the right of it as pictured. Water from the higher reaches, Schmadribach and from myriad streams above Obersteinberg, cascades down the valley, tumbling into Lake Brienz. Orange- coloured rocks are strewn around adding colour to this superb landscape and reminding us of Trachsellauenen’s mining past. A renovated miner’s house and furnace remnants stand close by.

UNESCO World Heritage Site – Swiss Alps Jungfrau Aletsch
The Breithorn peak dominates the skyline on the upward hike along with the Tschingelhorn to its right. The Hinteres Lauterbrunnental lies within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. ‘It is considered to be one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the Alps, particularly because of the impressive mountain range of which they are made up…..It represents the wonderful natural beauty of the Alps.’ Jungfraualetsch.ch
