The world renowned, beautiful ski resort of Alpine Wengen lies at the heart of 3 ski areas: Wengen-Grindelwald, First-Grindelwald and Mürren-Schilthorn. The mountain Bachalpsee Lake is blanketed in white snow and ice in winter and surrounded by Alpine peaks. The lake is less than an hour away by foot from the ‘First’ gondola. Please check Bachalpsee Lake and Faulhorn hikes open/closed status and ‘First’ gondola operating times. In clear weather this area is a true winter wonderland for hikers, skiers and tobogganers.
Views from the Bachalpsee
Looking out from Bachalpsee Lake you can admire the jagged crest of the Finsteraarhorn (highest peak in the region at 4274m, far right of photo below), the Schreckhorn and Wetterhorn Mountains to the left. Climb to the Faulhorn, toboggan in tow, and exhilarate in the stupendous view of the Bernese Alpine wall, the Bachalpsee Lake and mountain cirque. Leaving the Bachalpsee Lake behind, the longest toboggan run in Europe stretches from a little below the Faulhorn peak to Bussalp.
Summer at the Lake
During the summer months this mountain gem, Bachalpsee Lake, wears a very different guise. “One of Switzerland’s most beautiful lakes… spectacular view enhanced by the twinkling reflections of the mountain cirque… The climb to the Faulhorn is along a steep but even path… at the top… you reach one of the highest mountain hotels in Europe, and certainly the oldest (opened in 1832)”. Switzerland – Michelin Green Guide
Activities at First-Grindelwald
The ‘First Top of Adventure’ features several additional, exciting attractions besides the Bachalpsee Lake. In winter let the adrenaline gush on the thrilling First Glider and First Flyer. High speed flights with a spectacular view. The Cliff Walk, a precipitous, thrilling walkway is free to everyone. All are to be found very close to the Top Station of the gondola. The Bergrestaurant First is ideally placed for refreshments with a view!
