The New Eiger Express – Interconnections with Alpine Wengen and the Jungfrau Region

Eiger Express tricableway

Opened December 5. 2020, the new Eiger Express tricable gondola will propel you from Eigergletscher Station to Grindelwald Terminal in just 15 minutes journey time. Part of a glorious and varied scenic route to First’s ‘Top of Adventure’.  The VIP gondola, pictured, is just one of the forty four cabins of the Eiger Express. Standard cabins seat twenty six persons for the 15 minute journey from Eiger Glacier to Grindelwald Terminal.

Tricable extends over 6,483m length

The new Eiger Express gondola has a double carrier cable, enabling great lengths with only a small number of support towers. From Eiger Glacier to Grindelwald Terminus is a distance of 6,483m with only 7 support towers. Naturally there is far less damage to nature than might otherwise be the case. The summit station is situated dizzyingly at 2,328m above sea level. The Eiger Express journey opens up new panoramas, a bird’s eye view with a difference, from the iconic and renowned north face of the Eiger to the pinnacle of the Schilthorn, the ever popular Kleine Scheidegg and the sporting paradise of Männlichen. First, Faulhorn and Schwarzhorn Mountain peaks are stunning summer season desinations. High above the resort of Grindelwald, contributing to the Greater Scheidegg is the Wetterhorn Mountain, a distinctive shape against the sky.

World revered Alps of Wengen

In winter ski pistes are sacrosanct, they traverse the alps along with excited  skiers, snowboarders and winter walkers. Thereafter, Spring time is when the alps are home to a blossoming of Alpine flowers. In summer the cows roam and cheese is made.

After the snowmelt, streams gush and visitors explore the alp. Wengernalp, Mettlenalp, and Biglenalp each have their own character. One a secluded pasture beside the Trümmelbach, littered with weirdly gnarled tree stumps and single stones. Another lies above the forest line, bathing in sunshine. Yet another is a scenic halt on the Wengernalp Cogwheel Railway journey.

Summer and winter hiking is popular amidst the wonderful Alpine panoramas of the Jungfrau Region. A favourite summer hike passes from Wengen, through Innerwengen to Stalden and Mettlenalp, across Biglenalp and rising out of the dip it crosses lower Wengernalp before climbing along the glacial moraine to Eigergletscher station. Here a moonscape presents itself, however the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau Mountains tower aloft. Mini avalanches are frequent and bird watching can be rewarding here. The new buildings of the Eiger Express offer sanctuary in inclement weather. The tricableway itself is a delight.
