staubbachbänkli walk
Taking the road under the tracks, we soon vere off to the left walking parallel to the valley. The way leads to Innerwengen……caught in something of a time warp, it is delightful to stroll amongst the barns and chalets on the alp, delightful to explore one aspect of Wengen life. In May, snow covered peaks grace the skyline – the Breithorn, Tschingelhorn, Oberberghorn. Looking back we can see the famous resort of Wengen nestling on a sunny, south facing plateau above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Beyond is the Leiterhorn, why not explore this landscape tomorrow?

Taking the track down from Innerwengen and looking back, the Jungfrau peak and its east ridge appear above the trees. The Jungfrau makes up an iconic trio of mountains with the Mönch and Eiger. The Eiger north face is most famous as a challenging climb to conquer. Everyone’s Wengen life can encompass a trip to the Jungfraujoch, ’Top of Europe’ with the cogwheel railway. But perhaps climbing the north face would be a tad too far for most!

Climbing up from the benches at Staubbachbänkli we can see across to Wengen resort. The Leiterhorn rises behind and this is another recommended destination. Schynige Platte and the Oberberghorn are in the distance and above the hut on the right is the Männlichen. A Right Royal Wengen life in late May might include a ‘Royal Ride’ by Wengen-Männlichen Cableway.

Taking the opposite road out of Wengen, pass the Palace Hotel on the right, and follow the signs to the Leiterhorn. Views of the Schynige Platte, Isenfluh, Lauterbrunnen Valley, Jungfrau and Wengen are stunning from here. A circular walk brings us down behind ‘Eagle’s Nest’.

Make the most of life in Wengen. Our favourite, if a little more strenuous, hike takes us up from Staubbachbänkli, through Stalden to Biglenalp. Climbing out of idyllic Biglenalp we can take the steep path up to the Eiger moraine. There are stunning views here, of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau Mountains.
