Excitingly, the nostalgic Schynige Platte Railway and scenic ridge is opening soon for another memorable holiday season. There is so much on offer on the ridge: stupendous views, scenic trails, over 700 species of plant in the Alpine Garden, refreshments and a children’s play area. But perhaps the most special is the journey that takes you up through tunnels, across alp and in-between the beech trees, to catch amazing glimpses of the lakes below and the Alps above.
Schynige Platte Railway Opening
The historic Schynige Platte Railway is opening for the new season on Saturday June 5. 2021. Cross the romantic Breitlauenen Alp, travel through beech woods and original tunnels, cross precipitous track and enjoy the Alpine views on the way to the Platte. Open-air original carriage trips are especially enjoyable in the warmer weather. Stunning views unfold of Interlaken, the Lake of Thun and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau Mountains. Born in 1893 the steam trains were replaced by electric locomotives in 1914. All of the locomotives of the Schynige Platte Railway date from this pioneering time. On special steam excursions to Schynige Platte the carriages are hauled by steam locomotive just like the original railway of 1893. These are usually bookable in advance.
Alpine Garden Opening
Schynige Platte Botanical Garden is a unique attraction displaying over 700 species of plants native to the Swiss Alps. Experience and enjoy this unique Alpine Garden with its stunning views of the trio of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau Mountains.
Schynige Platte Trail Opening
Several circular trails start from the summit station. These are usually open during the season. However the epic trail to Faulhorn, Bachalpsee and First, which starts from here, has a shorter window of opportunity. Be sure to take an early train from Wilderswil to enjoy the day.
Seasons at Schynige Platte
Schynige Platte is open throughout the summer season, part of spring and well into the fall.
Obviously the Alpine Garden changes dramatically through the seasons. The light too is changing throughout the day and the seasons. Particularly enjoyable is the late fall sunshine gilding the Breitlaunenen Alp as the train makes its last descent of the day to Wilderswil.
