Lake Oeschinen lies above Kandersteg and is one of our favourite Wengen excursions. The impressive mountain lake is fed by the glacial streams of the 3000m peaks Blüemlisalp, Oeschinenhorn, Fründenhorn and Doldenhorn and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the Alps.
“A normal lake is knowable. A Great Lake can hold all the mysteries of an ocean, and then some.”
From Kandersteg, the gondola takes you up to Oeschinen station. The walk to the lake takes just 30 minutes from here or for those less able, an e-shuttle runs every half hour from the gondola to the Berghotel Oeschinensee. For hikers, the walking path from Kandersteg winds its way up to the lake and takes 1 hour and 20 minutes.
Hiking at the Oeschinen Lake
The waterfall circuit hike is just over 5 kilometres and takes you past many striking waterfalls as well as to a vantage point looking over the lake.
The viewpoints circuit is a more challenging hike at just over 6 kilometers and takes you higher up above the lake. Well worth it!
Activities at the Oeschinensee
Whizz down the 750 meter long mountain coaster track – a great experience for young and old and situated at the top gondola station.
Climb aboard the rowing boats and experience the lake up close and personal – available for rental on good weather days.
Make your day that little bit more special and make use of the barbecue sites around the lake. Book a grill basket2go from the Berghotel Oeschinensee.
