Ski the Alps : Walk the Alps with Alpine

No better place to start the quest to ‘ Ski the Alps’ or ‘Walk the Alps’ than the Bernese Oberland. No better mountain resort than Wengen!

Ski the Alps

From a base in the beautiful mountain resort of Wengen, Switzerland, you can tick off the 3 main ski areas in the vicinity.  A famously scenic place to begin the quest of Skiing the Alps.

Wengen-Grindelwald Area

Brings you up close to the impressive Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau trio of mountains, famous the world over. Skilled off-piste aficionados can even explore the Aletsch Glacier and Eiger west face.

Mürren-Schilthorn Area

Both Birg and the Schilthorn peak are great jumping off points. On a clear day it’s possible to see over 200 peaks from Piz Gloria (of Bond fame). Certainly a cold spot from which to See and Ski the Alps. Enticing blacks begin at the peak and at Birg.

First-Grindelwald Area

Some of the fit and adventurous ski-climb to the Faulhorn and Reeti peaks. Pausing for breath, these questers enjoy the wondrous panorama of lakes and mountains that spans the horizon. Then comes the fun descent in a flurry of snow! Be sure to tick off seeing the forbidding Schwarzhorn, the facing Wetterhorn, the pointy Schreckhorn and the spire of the Finsteraarhorn ( highest peak in the region) before skiing down the mountainside.

Walk the Alps

You can Ski, or Walk the Alps to some degree. Winter walking trails are quite extensive in the Bernese Oberland. My favourite hike is from First to Faulhorn peak via Bachalpsee. Although the mountain lake is frozen over in winter, the contours are bewitching.  Sledge or walk to Bussalp or Waldspitz from this trail. The view of distant Alps from Faulhorn peak is a must see too.A new addition is the walk from Eigergletscher to Kleine Scheidegg. This is a truly breathtaking experience even in the descent! The Jungfrau gradually reveals its several glaciers as you climb. Take the walk over the Scheidegg from Lauterbrunnen or Wengen to Grindelwald. The famous Lauberhorn rises from Wengen on the left and the International Downhill Ski Race course is evident in places. The north fortress-like wall of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau Mountains is on the right side.It isn’t possible to climb from Wengen to Männlichen in winter but the cableway takes you effortlessly to the top station in 5 minutes journey time. From here a short but steep trail leads to the crown summit. Another superlative viewpoint. Trails lead from the top station to Holenstein and another favourite, across to Kleine Scheidegg via Bustiglen. This trail crosses wide pistes and descends through gnarled and atmospheric forest before a steep rise between the ski slopes to the Scheidegg.
